The exploitation of natural resources is the basis of the Chilean economy. By collecting, using and transforming resources, countries create wealth for present and, hopefully, for future generations. However, the current resource exploitation logic in Chile is such that the chance that future generations will have access to such resources is under threat. Moreover, the consequences of the irrational exploitation of natural resources may induce serious and permanent damage of the environment. The problem can be aggravated as Chile—like other developing countries—increases its use of natural resources to the level of industrialized countries.
Sustainability in the exploitation of natural resources is a vision that seeks to provide for the needs of humanity while safeguarding the environment so that it will still be capable of providing for the needs of future generations. This session aims to discuss the challenges involved in implementing such a vision in Chile, as well as concrete proposals for facing these challenges.
